What is ABA Therapy?
“Promoting the desired behavior.”
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy that works on promoting the desired behaviors and limiting or eliminating the undesired ones. It helps analysts understand how behavior works, what triggers it, and how a person learns. Using this information, the Behavioral analysts teaches the patients skills that increase desired social, motor, and verbal behavior with reasoning power.
Who needs it?
People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) require ABA Therapy. But it can also help people suffering from conditions such as substance misuse, dementia, cognitive impairment after brain injury, eating disorders, anger issues, panic disorder, OCD, phobia, and personality disorder.
How can we help?
Our therapists work with you and your child to understand the child’s specific requirements and what approach to take to help the child improve on the desired behavior. It is usually divided into three phases.
Assessment:
In this phase, our therapists hold consultation and assessment sessions with you and your child. It is referred to as a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). This phase helps us know the child’s strengths, abilities, and challenges. During this phase, we also observe the child’s behavior, communication skills, and quirks.
Planning:
This phase includes creating a goal-oriented plan based on
observations in the previous phase. The plan is unique to the child’s requirements and caters to their special needs. Usually, the goal is to decrease problematic behaviors and increase positive skills like communication, self-care, and socializing.
Training:
With the help of parents, caregivers, and one-on-one sessions, our therapists work with the children to achieve the desired goals. The therapists teach you strategies on how to reinforce the positive behaviors the child learns in therapy. Along with this, we also teach you how to avoid reinforcements that are undesired.
Evaluation:
While we implement strategies, we simultaneously evaluate their effectiveness. We track progress and change the strategy if it’s not working.
